Metamorphosis by Kafka and So Long A Letter by Mariama B In both Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and So Long A Letter by Mariama B, the there is a big importance of family and friendship. Through the relationship between Gregor Samsa and his family and through the relationship of Modou, Ramatoulaye and Aissatou we can tell that there is a huge importance of family and friendship in both two texts. The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is about a man, Gregor Samsa, who is transformed overnight into a vermin. From the beginning, we see that a young, hard working man Gregor has turned into a bug. After his death, it is obvious that Gregor was of importance to his family. His family depended on him for their happiness but yet unappreciated him. So long a letter is about the story of Ramatoulaye Fall. She writes a letter to her lifelong friend Aissatou Ba. The reason for the writing is Ramatoulayes recent widowhood. As she gives her friend the details of her husbands death, she sets off on a journey of remembering the major events in her and Aissatous lives. In Metamorphosis, Gregor was very important to the familys welfare. He was the only working member of the family, and he and his family depended on it his job. Even though he wanted to quit his job, he still had to provide for his family. He felt that his family was too dependent of him. When Gregor wouldnt let anyone into his room because of his transformation, he thought that his family was harassing him because he was in danger of losing his job. After his family found out that Gregor had transformed into an insect, they realized that he was no longer of any use to the family, and he was unappreciated in every way. Gregor was now a problem for he had no function in the family. To his family he was only a bug and not Gregor. For this reason, they simply did not show him any respect. Similarly, in So Long A Letter, Ramatoulaye mentioned how she gave more than received from Modou. This can show how Ramatoulaye was also taken for granted like Gregor. What was lacking in Ramatoulaye and Modous marriage was a strong friendship or foundation between the two, and so eventually both their love and marriage fell apart. They never gave equally in their friendship so there never was that strong foundation. In metamorphosis there was also a communication problem within the family. When Gregor spoke to his mother, she didnt recognize the change in voice suggesting that they didnt speak often. His family could only mention was how useless he was. He was only good when he could provide for the family and so he was never really appreciated for who he was. The fact that he and his family didnt communicate well even before his metamorphosis made it even harder to talk to him when he was in the body of a giant vermin. Gregors parents were the cause of all of this. They totally lost interest in their son and what was going on with his life and were only interested in living their comfortable life. Just like in So Long A Letter, where I think Ramatoulaye and Modou didnt have enough communication. The lack of communication could have caused the failure of the marriage. Aissatou and Ramatoulaye were very good friends, and they had good communication with each other. Maybe the fact that they were friends helped it. The fact that Ramatoulaye and Modou were married could have caused this communication problem. In marriage you can be very different from your spouse, but because you are so united as a couple, it is much more difficult to have different ways of seeing stuff and still staying together. Unlike friends, where they can have totally different ideologies and ways of handling situations, just like Aissatou and Ramatoulaye. So, in a way I think Ramatoulaye and Modou may have been fine being friends and just talking to one another, as opposed to being married. In Metamorphosis, nothing much had changed after Gregors metamorphosis. Gregors family failed to realize that even as a bug, Gregor was still there and that he could understand everything they had to say. Many times he tried to show his loyalty, but still Gregor was not to be accepted for who he was. After some time, his family still hadnt got used to him and despite all of Gregors efforts,Ãâà his family had failed to realize that the insect that they had treated so cruelly was actually their son. In So Long A Letter, we can also say that Ramatoulaye, her children, and Aissatou all go through a metamorphosis as well. But in this case, it affected Ramatoulaye, her children, and Aissatou much more than when Gregor turned into a vermin, and the effect it had on Gregors family. Ramatoulayes friendship with Aissatou changed. It was her and Aissatous friendship that kept her going strong. Another thing that pushed her was Ramatoulayes children. Aissatou was there to give her advice, help her, and just to be there for any sort of support. She even gave Ramatoulaye a car which is a very generous thing to do. The fact that both of them gave equally in their friendship unlike Ramatoulaye and Modou is very touching indeed. After Gregors metamorphosis, his family goes through an even bigger metamorphosis than Gregor himself.Ãâà Soon after, his relationship between him and his family then starts to deteriorate. Gregors transformation leads to the bigger metamorphosis occurring to his family rather than to himself. One of Gregors family members who go through significant metamorphosis is Gregors sister Grete. Grete is probably the only person that he cared the most about.Ãâà After Gregor turned into a bug, Grete seems like the only person in his family that actually cares about him. She helps him keep his room clean and also brings him things to eat twice a day. She also worries what he might like to eat But he would never have been able to guess what his sister, in the goodness of her heart, actually did. To find out his likes and dislikes, she brought him a wide assortment of things.à [1]à Gretes kindness, even when she is afraid of her brothers unpleasant appearance, touches Gregor deepl y. She is the only person that he contacts with. This causes Gregor to feel less alienated than he already is. Her love and care gave him a reason to live, but when she stopped caring it killed him. Grete turned from this loving, caring, and warm sister into this dark, uncaring, and selfish person. As the time starts to pass, Grete practically stops caring about her brother. She starts treating him differently. No longer considering what she can do to give Gregor a special treat, his sister, before running to business every morning and afternoon, hurriedly shoved any old food into Gregors room with her foot.à [2]à Grete is not thinking about Gregor anymore; this makes her uncaring. Shoving things with her foot is an example of her showing him that he is a bug because bugs are usually stomped on with feet. The cleaning up of Gregors room, which she now always did in the evenings, could not be done more hastilyà [3]à . Grete now also doesnt care enough to clean Gregors room properly. Streaks of dirt ran along the walls, fluffs of dust and filth lay here and there on the floor.à [4]à The condition of Gregors room can tell the way Grete feels about her brother. Cleaning hastily, can also tell that Grete actually doesnt really care about Gregor and doesnt want anything t o do with him. Grete gets a job to help pay for expenses, and no longer wants takes care Gregor, this shows a selfish side of her. As the time went on, even Grete didnt car anymore Things cant go on like this. Maybe you dont realize it, but I do. I wont pronounce the name of my brother in front of this monster, and so all I say is: we have to try to get rid of it.à [5]à Grete doesnt want to believe that the bug is her brother. She wants to believe that the bug is just a bug that needs to be taken care of. After Gregor died, her mother and father both realised that Grete had grown up and that it was time for her to find a husband. So even though the transformation of Gregor mostly brought upon negative things to the family, he brought some sort of happiness to his family after he died.

Coral reefs are threatened by human activities like, sedimentation, pollution, overfishing and other factors (Dirk Lauretta, 1998). Destructive fishing practices with the use of poisons, expolsives, fine mesh nets reduces entire reefs ecosystems. Among all the marine environment, coral reefs are home to more than a quarter of all known marine fish species (M. Don, 1995). Coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the Earths marine environment, but are home to more than a quarter of all known marine fish species and tens of thousands of other species found nowhere else on earth. The degradation of coastal ecosystems not only results in a loss of biodiversity but also a loss of revenue, depleted fish stocks and increased exposure of communities to storms. Marine protected areas is a protected areas of ocean covering a wide range of marine areas with some level of restriction to protect living, non-living, cultural and historic resources. World Conservation Union (IUCN) defines marine protected areas as, any area of the intertidal or subtidal terrain, together with its overlying water and associated flora, fauna, historical and cultural features, which has been reserved by law or other effective means to protect part or all of the enclosed environments. In the world there are now 1300 marine protected areas and many more are in planning stage (Kelleher et al. 1995). Conservation and sustainable provision for human uses are the main objectives for marine protected areas. Marine protected areas can include: coral reefs, seagrass beds, tidal lagoons, mudflats, saltmarshes, mangroves, rock platforms, shipwrecks, archeological sites, underwater areas on the coast, and seabeds in deep waters (Australian Government). Marine protected areas are mainly dedicated to protect the biodiversity rich areas, like coral reefs. Among the most diverse ecosystem on the planet coral reefs are one of them. Coral reefs are important asset for biological and natural heritage, which serves as sea food, medicinal materials, income from tourism, buffering coastal cities and protect from storm damage (Dirk Lauretta, 1998). Description: Coral reefs have structural complexity with high biodiversity and densities. Globaly there are approximately 93,000 coral species are recorded and suggested estimates of reef associated species between one and three million which covers 284,000km2 or 0.09% of the total surface area of the ocean. Though these complex ecosystems are rare, 4000 worldwide fish species use these ecosystem as their home (Steven, 2008). Humans are increasingly rely on coral reefs because of their proximity to shore, fisheries support and recreational opportunities. But unfortunately these ecosystems are in greate threat due to overfishing, destructive fishing practices, land based pollution, agriculture, deforestation and global climate change (Wilkinson,1998). Coral reefs have biological, socioeconomic, scientific and aesthetic values (Smith,1978; Salm Kenchinton, 1984; Clark et al., 1989) and there are many ways to conserve or manage coral reef resources through the establishment of marine protected areas (Bohnsack,1990; Polunin,1990; Rowley,1994) The majority of worlds coral reefs are situated in the waters of developing nations which is a big challenge for conservation of these ecosystems (Souter Linden, 2000), because of poverty, hunger, political instability and economic development, where coral reef preservation is not the top priorities for the governments (McManus,1997). Many coral reef fishes and invertebrates are relatively site attached and target fish species moved to greater distances and also play intra-reefal movements between reefs across channels (Davies, 1995; Chapman Kramer, 2000). Now a days coral reefs are in serious trouble in the whole world by combination of stresses which are threatening their survival, and also by the following facts overexploitation of resources and commercial fishing; degradation and destroy the habitat by destructive fishing practices increasing coastal populations, which are expected to double in the next 50 years; poor and unauthorized uses of land and runoff of nutrients, sediments and pollutants. disease outbreaks, poor water quality and pollutants; coral bleaching with seawater temperatures increasing and global change; and deforestation of coastal mangrove. Even apparently transient fish such as the blue trevally show strong site fidelity (Holland et al. 1996). This has huge implications for MPA design. Though many species like coral trouts move long distance (Davies 1995; Kramer Chapman 1999), within the reefs but their densities will increases within the MPA area which can only protect part of an island (Russ Alcala 1996a; Evans Russ in press). MPAs established to protect the whole reefs or part of the island to get the best result for conservation and larval export objectives (ISRS, 2004). Reefs at Risk: A Map-Based Indicator of Threats to the Worlds Coral Reefs, is the first global assessment of coral reefs to map areas at risk from overfishing, coastal development, and other human activity. The study finds that nearly 60 percent of the earths coral reefs are threatened by human activity ranging from coastal development and overfishing to inland and marine pollution leaving much of the worlds marine biodiversity at risk. Key findings of the report Coral reefs of Southeast Asia, the most species-rich on earth, are the most threatened of any region.à More than 80 percent are at risk, primarily from coastal development and fishing- related pressures. Most United States reefs are threatened.à Almost all the reefs off the Florida coast are at risk from a range of factors, including runoff of fertilizers and pollutants from farms and coastal development. Close to half of Hawaiis reefs are threatened, while virtually all of Puerto Ricos reefs are at risk. Nearly two-thirds of Caribbean reefs are in jeopardy.à Most of the reefs on the Antilles chain, including the islands of Jamaica, Barbados, Dominica and other vacation favorites, are at high risk. Reefs off Jamaica, for example, have been ravaged as a result of overfishing and pollution. Many resemble graveyards, algae-covered and depleted of fish. Reefs at risk revisited (2010) include the same local and regional threats as previous reefs at risk with two new components: (a) an assessment of threats related to climate change (coral bleaching and ocean acidification), and (b) an evaluation of the social and economic implications of reef degradation on the worlds coastal populations. The establishment of most marine reserves have two main objectives: conservation and sustainable provision for human uses. Marine protected areas are important for their biological dimensions, such as, productivity, importance as habitat. Breeding and migration, and biodiversity. Marine protected areas used as tool for the marine environment to meet management objectives which reflect political and social views and reconcile fishery and conservation concerns. The success of MPA depends on the quality of governance and the social and economic situation how people use marine goods and services (Jennings, 2009). The report done by fisheries doctorines summarize the role of marine protected areas are; small MPA can lead the increase of number and size of molluscan and crustacean with low mobility, reduction in fishing mortality and changes in habitates, increases in spawning, evidence of spil over, protecting juveniles, spin-off benefits for commercial species (Defra, 2006). MPAs can provide great role for coral reefs, for example, the worlds biggest Great Barrier Reef one of the largest protected area allowing sustainable utilization of the reef with numerous uses often conflicting needs by providing support for the economic, social, and political arguments to protect coral reefs. Reefs are tremendously high dynamic and open ecosystem, depends on currents carrying nutrients, water and oxygen, transporting larvae and other materials and also carry pollutants and sediments which inhibit new recruitment of coral and fish in the reefs community. MPAs are established as a conservation tool, play significant role in tourism, positive effects on abundances, biomass, sizes and reproductive outputs of many reef species. The use of MPAs to manage the long distance migrating species by the protection of the habitats by a small portion of certain species population thought to have high site fidelity (Gell Roberts, 2003). Many coral reef fish species use different habitats like, sea grasses, estuaries, and mangrove swamps (Nagelkerken et al. 2002; Mumby et al. 2004), and MPAs can protect these representative habitats on their life stages for management purposes. Ecological linkages The marine ecosystem controlled by bottom-up such as variable recruitment (Doherty Williams, 1988) or top-down processes through predation (Grigg et al. 1984). A wide range of species coral reef fish shows high variable recruitment (Newman et al. 1996; Meekan et al. 2001) which may impact on the ecosystem. Both coral reef fish abundances and assemblage structure affected by recruitment and predation. Predation on the other hand may serve to control outbreaking species such as crown-of-thorns starfish (Dulvy et al. 2004b), MPA size potentially influencing the ability of a MPA on part of an island or reef to control such outbreaks. Role of marine protected areas: Protection of different species which are very sensitive for fishing is the main role of marine protected area, such as fragile benthichabitat-forming organism like, gorgonians are protected by MPAs. Reef biodiversity also improved their habitat quality by MPAs. MPAs also play improtant role for those species which are not doing well under any sort of fisheries management system. In reef MPAs can become more valued for divers due to increase in abundance, size and diversity of reef associated fish species (Williams and Polunin, 2000). It also recover the stocks of different species and ecosytem functioning within the area. Another important role is reducing or eliminating fishing mortality. Coral reef fish also based on increases in fish density and size (Russ, 2002). The size of MPA depends upon the goal and ecology of the relevant species. Smaller MPAs provide local fisheries benefits and larger MPAs provide more regional benefits through larval production and recruitment (Robert, 2000). Conclusion: MPAs are not the best solution for fisheries management but its a useful tools for preservation and enhancement for certain critical habitats, but in specific condition MPAs may be benifited for commercial mobil species (Defra, 2006). Last three decades MPAs used as a management framework for coral reef conservation but rarely achieved their goals due to lack of regulation enforcement. From the 1300 MPAs management only 383 MPAs are effective which is only 29% (Russ, 1999). Among the parks only 9% are high management level that generally achieves their management objectives (McClanahan, 1999) and only 660 MPAs contained coral reefs by 2000 (Spalding, 2001). Sometimes the design and the implimentation of MPAs differ between developed and non-developed countries, because people much more dependent on resource exploitation. In most cases community involvement and support during MPA establishment are most important for MPA success (ISRS, 2004). Recidivism of Sex Offenders Essay -- Adult Sex Offender Recidivism
Sex offenders have been a serious problem for our legal system at all levels, not to mention those who have been their victims. There are 43,000 inmates in prison for sexual offenses while each year in this country over 510,000 children are sexually assaulted(Oakes 99). The latter statistic, in its context, does not convey the severity of the situation. Each year 510,000 children have their childhood's destroyed, possibly on more than one occasion, and are faced with dealing with the assault for the rest of their lives. Sadly, many of those assaults are perpetrated by people who have already been through the correctional system only to victimize again. Sex offenders, as a class of criminals, are nine times more likely to repeat their crimes(Oakes 99). This presents a problem for the public, as potential victims, and the legal system which is entrusted by the public for protection. It would be irresponsible for the legal system to ignore the criminal class of sex offenders, for they are subject to a recurring physiological urge that requires the use of effective restraints that would curb the habitual repetition of episodes producing the harmful consequences to the public(Schopf 95). Air Pollution in Mexico City Mexico City adds an estimated one million new residents each year, resulting in one million new aggravates to the cityââ¬â¢s already abominable air quality (Collins, 119). Over the span of a generation, Mexico Cityââ¬â¢s air has gone from being one of the worldââ¬â¢s cleanest to one of the worldââ¬â¢s most polluted, as well as the most polluted in its country. The average visibility in the city is down from almost 100 km in the 1940s to only 1.5 km today, removing the once beautiful landscape of the surrounding snow-capped volcanoes (Yip, 1). More significantly, however, Mexico Cityââ¬â¢s air problems have resulted in a notable decrease in the health of its residents, particularly its children. There are a variety of reasons for the decline in air quality, including factory emissions, suspended particles, vehicles, as well as problematic geographic hindrances. Fortunately, Mexico City is doing a lot in response to the problem, including vehicle control, mas s transit improvements, required industry emission reductions, and an investing in research and education programs. Regardless of these actions, however, Mexico Cityââ¬â¢s air is still significantly affecting the quality of life for its residents, and the city must continue to make changes in order for real progress to occur. Vehicles are responsible for up to eighty percent of air pollution in Mexico. There are close to four million automobiles, buses, and trucks in the city, the average of which is ten years old, and thus in poor repair with ineffective emission controls. Emissions are increased by the excessive traffic compressed into narrow streets with few parking spaces, requiring low-speed cruising (Collins, 125). Lovely Bones
The Grieving Process of Abigail The Lovely Bones is written by Alice SeBold and is about a young girl named Susie who was brutally murdered by her next door neighbor, Mr. Harvey. No one suspected Mr. Harvey in the beginning, but with Susieââ¬â¢s help from the beyond, he became the lead suspect. Susie began to send clues to her family from heaven, but the problem was that only her father, brother and sister could connect with her and feel her presence. This problem expanded quickly and because of it, tore the family apart. Abigail, Susieââ¬â¢s mother, became the one torn from the family. Abigail dealt with Susieââ¬â¢s death differently than everyone else in the Salmon family. Abigailââ¬â¢s grieving process was slower than everyone elseââ¬â¢s grieving process. Abigail becomes the antagonist in the novel and becomes the one character that canââ¬â¢t face Susieââ¬â¢s death. When the Salmon family first finds out that Susie is indeed dead, Abigail responds by being depressed, she is sad and shocked by the fact that her oldest child and first daughter is actually gone and will never be coming back, and much like the rest of the Salmon family, she demands answers on who, why and how her daughter, Susie was murdered. My mother sat on a hard chair by the front door with her mouth open. Her pale face paler than I had ever seen it. Her blue eyes staringâ⬠(Sebold 11). Abigail canââ¬â¢t believe that Susie is gone. Things like this donââ¬â¢t happen to a family like hers. She doesnââ¬â¢t know what to do or say at this moment. Abigail remains depressed throughout certain points in the novel. ââ¬Å"You look invincibleâ⬠(Sebold 211). Abigail wishes that she could be as strong as Lindsey. Abigail calls her invincible because she wishes that she could be as strong and able to care for the family and deal with Susieââ¬â¢s death like Lindsey. ââ¬Å"Nothing is ever certainâ⬠(Sebold 20). Jack was the one who gave Abigail this idea, but she clings on to this saying as if somewhere out there, Susie is alive, despite the recent evidence. Abigail goes through the denial stage of grief and puts her defenses up to protect herself from the truth. ââ¬Å"How can you be sure he killed these other girlsâ⬠(Sebold 291). It seems as if Abigail was trying to defend Mr. Harvey. She doesnââ¬â¢t want to hear about Susieââ¬â¢s case anymore and sheââ¬â¢s not interested in who killed her daughter, she just wants to be able to move on with her life. Abigail goes through the grief stages of anger and bargaining. Abigail becomes frustrated with her family and their pursuit of Susieââ¬â¢s killer. Abigail then begins to bargain with the one man that could solve the mystery that surrounds the death of Susie. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know what to sayâ⬠¦we have a family, a family and a son and Iââ¬â¢m goingâ⬠(Sebold 185). Abigail is pushed to her limit and sheââ¬â¢s done with her familyââ¬â¢s foolishness. She wants to move on but her family and Susie are holding her back. ââ¬Å"How can I be expected to be trapped by a man frozen in timeâ⬠(Sebold 276). Abigail doesnââ¬â¢t want to be with a person whoââ¬â¢s still dwelling on their daughterââ¬â¢s murder and not moving on. ââ¬Å"I just want it to be spoken out loud by somebody. To have it said aloud. Iââ¬â¢m ready, I wasnââ¬â¢t beforeâ⬠Abigail is looking for comfort from someone who isnââ¬â¢t dwelling on the past. Len provides her this comfort but really sheââ¬â¢s just burying her feelings towards Susie deep inside. Abigail doesnââ¬â¢t fully accept the fact that Susie is dead and gone and will no longer return. She pushes her family away and takes herself away from the situation by moving to California to begin a new life. She becomes estranged from her family and her family becomes estranged from her. Although deep inside Abigail misses her daughter Susie, she will never be able to accept her death fully because she goes through too much of the denial and bargaining stages of grief. Abigail isnââ¬â¢t in touch with her emotions, like her husband Jack is, and she acts out in a destructive way which damages her relationship between her and her family. Works Cited Sebold, Alice.
